Periwinkle grew along the edge of the driveway, her tiny blue flowers tucked between cracks in the pavement. The gardener called her a weed. The other flowers whispered behind her back.

"You don't belong here," the roses said.

Periwinkle looked at her thin stem, her small petals. "Maybe they're right," she whispered.

One afternoon, a heavy rain washed soil across the driveway, burying Periwinkle's roots. She couldn't breathe. She began to wilt.

A young boy running home from school saw the blue petals struggling in the mud. He knelt down and gently brushed the dirt away.

"You're tough," he said. "You don't give up."

Periwinkle's roots found air again. She straightened her stem.

The boy visited her every day, bringing water, talking to her.

"You're my favorite flower," he said.

The gardener saw the boy's kindness and stopped calling Periwinkle a weed. He built a small stone ring around her, protecting her from the driveway.

The other flowers stopped whispering. They saw that a weed was just a flower without a champion.

Periwinkle bloomed brighter than ever, her blue petals a beacon for anyone who felt unwanted.

She still grows by the driveway, but now people stop to admire her.

"She survived," they say.

"She thrived," the boy adds, now a young man.

Periwinkle learned that belonging isn't about where you grow. It's about who sees you.

The boy still visits, kneeling beside her, brushing away dirt.

"You're still my favorite," he says.

Periwinkle trembles in the breeze, blue and proud.

She is not a weed. She is a flower with a friend. And that is the best kind of flower to be.
